Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette

Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette | Decoding the Difference

Explore the different fragrance types and why some are long-lasting and perform better.

A feel-good perfume is very much on everyone’s minds as a pleasant fragrance can ease you out on a stressful day, can’t it? The incredible power of our olfaction – a sense of smell that eases us even on the greyest days- comes in multiple variants that suit every individual’s liking. These variants can make any perfume addict hoard their favourites, but can the perfume maestro in you distinguish between the various types of perfumes?

Before we understand the types, let us first go through a short brief on what the term fragrance means.

This term generally comes from the word ‘fragrant’ itself, meaning “a pleasant, sweet scent”. Therefore, any object associated with it means anything that enhances the smell. Although a few people prefer using the term scent, this term can mean anything from the smell of a Greek Goddess to cats, as we believe it can mean any particular smell. Many people prefer this word, and likewise with perfume, cologne, Attar, or Perfume oil.

Thus, many misconceptions and confusion exist as some products out there that have variants released would be labelled by manufacturers, especially the Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum, respectively. So let’s understand what these terms comprehend, what they are for and how or when they should be used.

So, without further ado, let’s dive right into the difference between these 2 types of fragrances.

Eau de Parfum

Before buying the perfume, ask yourself these questions – Are you looking for a long lasting perfume? Or Want a perfume with the highest essence concentration?

An Eau de Parfum (EDP) is the right choice for you. With the highest fragrance concentration, EDP is known to have the strongest concentration of fragrance oils that ranges between 15 to 20%. This is why you can get a solid four to five hours of your fragrance working hard on average.

No matter the occasion, this fragrance type can be more reliable than others and is relatively less expensive than perfume.

Eau de Toilette

Like any other word associated with fragrance, the term Eau de Toilette also originated from its French counterpart – “Faire sa Toilette”. Eau de Toilette (EDT) is known to have a fragrance concentration between 5% to 15%. Considered to be cheaper than the EDP, it is one of the most popular kinds of fragrance available. Normally lasting for not more than two to three hours, EDT is considered by some as daywear (while EDP is considered nightwear).

Other Remarkable Difference

Despite various misconceptions, the difference between EDP & EDT is remarkably straightforward, as the distinction lies in the concentration of perfume oil. Yet, apart from the fragrance types, its notes also have an equal contribution when it comes to determining the final scent and tone of any perfume.

As a general rule of thumb, EDP will always contain more perfume oil than EDT due to the difference in the oil concentrations. The lighter concentration of EDT makes it less harsh on the skin. Thus, it can be applied directly to your skin and will not cause irritation or a burning sensation, which is common in perfumes with a stronger concentration.

Make the best choice: Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette

Beyond this, there are even more variants of fragrances, such as mists and aftershaves. Higher-end perfumes can cost a significant amount of money, so researching beforehand will ensure you get the type of fragrance you want.

Also, each of the variants has its own fans in the perfume industry. Depending on your requirements and choices, you can select from several options on Al-Nuaim/ Eftina and buy the one that suits your needs the most.

Happy Shopping!
